Deer Baby Casey

We had Casey's first birthday party today. 

It was a brunch, shrimp and grits, mimosas, buttermilk lime dressing on bib lettuce, deer cake pops, and a Berry Birthday Cake.  A far cry form the events we had planned for Harper's party, but, well, babies don't really do so much.  This is to your advantage as parents, I have learned. 

She had the time of her life.  Her BFF, Sully, came with his awesome family, and so did her G-ma (my mom).  Sully's big sister and Harper 'helped' Casey open all her presents.  It may have been the most attention she ever got from the big kids, which is all she ever wanted.

Everyone had a long afternoon nap when it was all over, which is the icing on the cake of any day around here.

The boxes are from my etsy shop.  In the big girls', I put some crafty things for them to play with during the party.  Three year olds are not so much for sitting though a leisurely brunch...

The table runner is wrapping paper from Target.

I made the polka dot garland, which was not crafted to the best of my ability by any means, but Casey did not mind one bit.

It was a lovely laid back moring, and I couldn't have imagined a nicer time for such a sweet little baby.

A Farewell to Cookies

You might have seen it last night, the new surprise for Buttermilk Bake Shop.  I know some of you are not so happy with me right now, likely scowling at me through your computer screen asking, “What did you do with my baked goods, little lady?”

I published their recipes!  Yeah for sharing?

And, we are selling eco-friendly baking and packaging supplies in the shop.

*Gasp*  I know.  Since Casey was born we have been experimenting with was to make the bakery less work.  In the end, I decided to put a hold on baking for the shop. 

Also, since I began MilkyMilk I’ve struggled with what this is.  I’ve decided to keep business and pleasure separate.  From now on, this will be my mommy blog, a hopefully amusing collection of our adventures in and around the house.  It will mostly chronicle my failures, because those are what I find most amusing.

Buttermilk Bakes will be all recipes all the time!  I’m super excited about it.  I finally get to devote more time in the kitchen to coming up with new goodies.  Goodies that don’t have to stand up to the strain and time of shipping, so the possibilities abound!  I’m also excited because now I don’t have to worry about posting potentially scatological stories about raising two babies next to cupcakes and pies.  

Case in point:  Harper is potty trained!  For the most part…  Oh, one milestone after another over here.

Buttermilk

So, if you have stopped by the shop lately, you might have noticed we are still on vacation mode.  We are working on a few fun changes this month, as to not derail you from any potential resolutions.  I know.  We are so thoughtful.

 

I must say, I'm having a hard time getting started on those changes.  Someone needs to light a fire under my butt pronto.  I did, however, find the time this week to do some of the things I miss out on when we are busy.  Like, making up random cake recipes!   

Harper reallllllly wanted Wonder Pet cupcakes today.  (Damn you Noggin.)  I have very very few of the long list of random candies it takes to make Ming-Ming cupcakes.  It also seemed like it should be a white cake.  Saying I like white cake, is like saying my favorite color is clear.  So, I made a few changes to an old recipe, and voila: Buttermilk Cake!  

Oh, lordy.  So good.  The brown sugar swiss meringue butter cream frosting was awful awful awful, in my opinion.  Harper strongly disagrees.  

 

Well.  Enough slacking.  I guess I'll just start my new year tomorrow...  Or next week.  Monday, the 10th is the first day of the rest of my life!  Or, Tuesday, the 11th, works, too.

F.A.Q.s: An Update

It has been well over a year since we did our Buttermilk Bake Shop FAQs, and they are begging for an update.  So here it is, with fresh changes.

Q:  What is your packaging like?

A:  Our treats are packaged in cellophane bags, tied with jute baker’s twine and a label.  It is simple, and I am a fan of simple.

 

Q:  Can I include a note with my order?

A:  Please do!  Just let us know what you would like it to say, and we will include a very cute card with your order.

 

Q:  Where can I get your tasty treats?

A:  For now, we only sell them though etsy.  If you live in the Chicago Fairfield County Connecticut area, we offer pick up and delivery.  We also offer a more extensive menu, which changes monthly.  {It has a number of things that do not ship well, like cake & scones.}

 

Q:  I have come to this blog looking to satisfy me sweet tooth, and all I hear about is 'Baby this & Harper that.'  What is up with that?

A:  I like my baby babies.

 

Q:  Why does your baby eat dirt?

A:  (O.k.  So, no one really asks me some of these questions.)  Dirt is good for you.  The New York Times said it, so I believe it.

 

Q:  Why was Harper always eating dirt when she was itty bitty, but Casey is spick and span?

A:  Harper won’t let the baby eat dirt.  Hypocrite, I know.

 

Q:  Are you making pocket and pockets full of money on etsy?

A:  Yes.  But they are Barbie sized pockets.

 

Q:  When are you moving to Connecticut?

A:  The end of June.

 

Q:  How do you find the time?

A:  Harper is on a very strict nap schedule, which we treated with total disregard today due to ANOTHER MOLAR.  She is a very happy toddler when she has predictable naps, and it makes me a very happy mama.  I learned today, again, that this is not to be questioned or toyed with.  Also, Skylar helps out tons, and we are very luck to have close friends who take care of Harper when things get too busy.

 My mom lives close by, Harper is in nursery school two mornings a week, the baby (fingers crossed) takes regular naps, Skylar helps out a ton, we have buddies to trade sitting with, I struggle with insomnia... so basically, there are pockets of time here and there.

 

Q:  How are you going to bake, blog, take care of the baby and pack and move?

A:  (Fingers in ears)  LA LA LALA LA

(This cracks me up, because as soon as we moved I got pregnant!  Then we moved again.  I thought I was busy then, HA-ha.)
